When will we as Americans start to recognize each other as Americans instead of a Social Class, Race, Ethnicity or any other category you can dream up? From what I’ve seen, the only time the United States becomes “United,” it takes a major event such as a terrorist attack, to happen on our front porch. It’s very frustrating to hear people from all walks of life complain about how this race/ethnicity is this way or a certain religion is bad because of this or that. Instead, how about we say, we as Americans have all types of issues, what can be done to fix them? Whether you believe it or not, or are willing to accept it, we are all Americans. Yes, I know there are those that are American through a process of paperwork and not by birthright, but why are we all treated differently?

A lot of individuals are willing to sacrifice their lives just to escape one way of living so they can achieve the “American Dream,” meaning, they want what seems to be a better life and also have the right to be able to make their own decisions and so forth. I also realize that there are a large number of illegal immigrants in America (Different Topic). I am not going to sit here and tell you that at some point in my life that I have never been prejudice against another race or religion of certain people because of an irreversible act of Terrorism. I will admit and I am not ashamed to say that after the individuals that were responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, and they were identified that I contained a strong hate for people of the Middle-Eastern Decent/Muslim faith. That is a very ignorant way of thinking, I know, but I wasn’t or didn’t want to be educated at the time, because I thought it was the right thing to do. It took me having to be deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan and forced to interact with some common individuals in those countries to realize that you can’t blame an entire religion or a group of people because they have a couple of “misguided” children. I won’t take all the blame for this hatred either, some of that hate can be attributed to the way the media portrayed these people at that time. It took me to see with my own eyes there are people in these countries that don’t have a radical way of thinking and they don’t wake up everyday with the thought of killing Americans or Foreign Troops on their mind.

America has come a long way since the days of slavery and segregation, but there is still a large number of ethnic groups (not just Black) who think that they are owed something by White Americans. I didn’t realize these ethnic groups are being forced to America in large numbers, packed to the brim of a ship for months on end with barely enough food and water; I didn’t realize these ethnic groups are still being beat up, attacked by dogs, deterred by the National Guard because they want to attend a certain University for higher learning. I understand what individuals in that era had to endure and I am not saying forget about it, how about we honor those individuals by coming together, so as they look down on us, they will be able to say, “I now understand why I had to endure pain and suffering; so the future America doesn’t have to.” It’s no longer a Race, Ethnic or Social Class thing, it’s an America thing. We all struggle with the lack of proper education, lack of motivation to get a job, lack of respect for our elders, lack of regard for law enforcement/authority in general, etc. I could go on, but what is that going to do other than make you wish that I would shut up? Instead of segregating a certain race or ethnic group, how about we work together as 1 group, Americans, and tackle this problem together. If we continue to separate ourselves, this process will happen continuously.

That also rings true when we set out to the polls to elect our officials of Government, whether it be City, County, State or Federal Levels. If we as Americans are not taking advantage of our right to vote and are voting for the right reasons then it’s our fault that the individual we elect does not meet the expectations set forth. I honestly think, no matter which party is in control, someone, somewhere is still going to complain. Its very hard to make everyone happy. I’m sure not many Black Americans will admit to this, but I didn’t vote for President Barak Obama solely because he was black, I voted for him in the 2008 Presidential Election, because I thought he was going to finally get this country back on track. I had hope and believed in what he said. It’s now 2014 and it feels like we are “marching in place,” because the same individuals we elected (The House, Senate and Congress) seem to want to pacify the rest of the world instead of making sure the people in its country are taken care of, but that’s a whole different issue. Don’t get me wrong, I do understand we have to uphold our foreign relations, because that’s just how it works, but I don’t agree with making another country happy with the sacrifice of innocent men and women. (That’s an entirely different issue; don’t get me going!)

In order for America to fix itself, we as Americans need to stop thinking of “self “and start thinking of “us.” There is a small percentage of individuals that have my way of thinking and I am sure any changes of this magnitude will not be seen in my lifetime, hopefully for my children. Maybe they will get it right. There are going to be those that read this and will be able to take bits and pieces from this; it’s a start. Now only if we could get our elected officials on the same page. Its time for America to take back America and stop letting an individual think for us. We all know what we want, we just need to stop depending on someone else to try to figure out what it is.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you should’ve read or at least heard about a Military Contractor that shot and killed 12 people in a Washington Navy Yard. How in the world does this happen? Okay, let me get this right: He is a former Reservist Sailor in the Navy with a history of outbursts and he was Chaptered out of the Military due to Patterns of Misconduct and he has had numerous run-ins with the law, right? I just wanted to make sure that we are all on the same sheet of music here. Now, back to my first question: How in the world does this happen? I’m sure, that in order for you to apply for a job with the government as a contractor and you put on your application that you were in the military, you have to provide a piece of paper that’s called, damn it slipped my mind, ummmmm, I got it. A DD-214! Now on this DD-214 it shows and explains the status of your discharge, whether it be retirement, chaptered under certain circumstances and if it is an Honorable, Other Than Honorable or Dishonorable Discharge. Whatever the case may be, back to my first question: How in the world does this happen?

How did this person slip through the cracks with so many red flags? I wonder who the individual that was in charge of the vetting process and the hiring of this individual, if his/her job is in question at this point, if it isn’t then in my opinion, it should. You were put in the position to hire the most qualified person to fill a certain position, correct? Then why shouldn’t your job be questioned? If you are looking out for the well-being of the government agency that put you in charge and this issue happened under your watch, then you should be fired or at least downgraded. I know many can and will probably argue that you can’t scrutinize every single application, if you question that, why be put in a position of Authority if you have this way of thinking? Why reward this individual with a GS job and the ability to use any facility on a Military Installation? Filling out an application to work as a government contractor is pretty lengthy, I’ve heard. I do know this, before you are hired for ANY job, a background check is done. I’m pretty confident that SOMEONE saw the red flags, but overlooked them because they needed to fill a certain position.

Don’t think that because I am questioning the people in charge of the vetting process and hiring, that I am condoning what he did. What he did was horrible and this incident is going to make the vetting process even harder and longer. On the outside looking in, this is going to make it even harder for Veterans like myself to get a federal job. I feel that veterans are already at a disadvantage; I feel this way because if you had a job in the Military that isn’t parallel or related to a job in the civilian world, that makes job hunting harder. For instance, while I was in the Army I was a Chemical Operations Specialist. I know you’re thinking then I shouldn’t have a problem getting a job in that field. Nope! Unless I have certain Hazardous Material qualifications, my job doesn’t relate to any job in the civilian world. That wasn’t my fault, I just did not get the chance to go to these courses. For courses like that, the unit sending you has to pay for the training.

But I have gotten off the subject……….This is an excerpt from an article on cnn.com: According to that report, which is related to an investigation into a harassment complaint at a Marriott hotel in Newport, Alexis said he first heard the people “talking to him through a wall” at a Residence Inn in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he’d been staying. He packed up and went to an unidentified hotel on a Navy base in Newport where he heard the same voices talking to him. He moved to a third hotel, the Marriott, according to the police report. There, Alexis first told authorities that the three individuals spoke to him through the floor and then the ceiling. Alexis said the individuals were using “some sort of microwave machine” that sent “vibrations through the ceiling, penetrating his body so he cannot fall asleep.” He told authorities, according to the police report, that, “He does not have a history of mental illness in his family and that he never had any sort of mental episode.” So according to law enforcement, this doesn’t spark their spidey sense, that something might be seriously wrong and should have possibly escorted him somewhere to get help for this issue? In another article from cnn.com: Investigators also learned that Alexis had recently made contact with two Veterans Administration hospitals for apparent psychological issues.

In no way shape or form and I condoning what this idiot did, but if he made contact with two Veteran Administration Hospitals for some issues, then he was failed by the system. The VA system is all jacked up and needs to be fixed. For example, I had an appointment at the VA hospital in Charleston, South Carolina for my foot. After the appointment, the doctor told me to make another appointment so a final decision could be made for surgery on my foot. That appointment was in June 2013, when I went to the receptionist to make another appointment, the next available appointment wasn’t until November 2013. I don’t know who is in charge of the Veterans Affairs System, but it needs to be fixed. As I said before, I am not condoning what this idiot did, but from reading an article on cnn.com he apparently tried to reach out for help, but we all know that the media can sometimes stretch the truth, just to make a point.

Another question that needs to be asked is, how in the world did he get these weapons on this military installation? The answer to that question is simple, the Security Agency in charge of securing this Navy Yard doesn’t care or the standard they set is too relaxed. As far as I know, the only thing he did was he showed his contractor Identification to gain access to the Navy Yard. It is said that he had 3 weapons, an AR-15, a Shotgun and a hand gun. The FBI is saying that the handgun was taken from a security guard. Unbelievable! I am still in shock that this happened. We need to wake up America.

Instead of fighting the war on Terrorism in countries abroad, we need to start right here in our own. It’s getting to the point that you can’t be comfortable at home, because of acts like this. It is unfortunate that those 12 individuals had to die by the hands of an idiot, but this needs to be an eye opener to our Leadership that the War on Terror is on the door step of the United States. I hope for the individuals that gave their lives today didn’t suffer. They are in a better place now. Some say that there is nothing we can do, but I say yes there is. We need to start policing ourselves, our families and friends. If you see something or hear something out the ordinary, don’t be afraid to either say something to that person or report it to the appropriate authorities. It all starts with us, THE REGULARS.

THE REGULARS can make the change. All we need to do is put the most qualified individual in place to put America back on track. It shouldn’t matter if that person is a Republican, Democrat, Independent or Conservative. If the individual is looking out for the well-being of OUR America, then we need to vote for that person. America is on the verge of self-destruction. We can fix this. Today, we as Americans need to stand together just like we did on September 11, 2001. If do that, OUR America will become a better place. It’s not going to happen over-night.Image

Forget about race, ethnicity, what state your from and look at each other as human beings and we, THE REGULARS can fix OUR America.
