Who’s Ready for Some damn College Football?

posterAfter all the chaos of the National Signing Day put behind us, who is ready for some good ol’ College Football? I know I am.

The last two games of the season for my Alabama Crimson Tide really left a sour taste in my mouth. To top it off, the Alabama Coaching staff hired Lane Kiffin. I know many of the Tide faithful are looking as if we are going to have another subpar season. Last year, our record was 11-2. As an Alabama Crimson Tide Fanatic, that is unacceptable. Why, you ask? It’s not because we lost those two games, it’s how we lost those games. As fans, we hold the players to a standard that is sometimes unreachable. We expect them to win a National Title every year. Could we have done it last year? In my opinion, yes, but I don’t get paid to make those decisions so I am only looking at this from one point of view and that’s as a fan.

I would love to see the Crimson Tide win every game, but holding those players and the Coaching Staff to that standard is crazy. You can’t win all the time, not even having a team full of 5 Star athletes. I would love to sit here and say that we are going to dominate next season, but if you look at all the factors, those questions can’t be answered yet. Our “Game Manager” as some called him, A.J. McCarron is going off to the NFL, so we are going to have a hard time trying to nail down who will hold that elite title as the Alabama Crimson Tide starting Quarterback. We have a stable of capable Running Backs and Wide Receivers, but what about the Defense? Can Kirby Smart take the talent that we had last year and project those guys to a number 1 type Defense? I don’t know. Many people say that it takes a great Defense to win games and I believe that to be somewhat true, but you can’t win without having a strong Quarterback.

As much as I would love the Tide to capitalize at the Quarterback position and possibly use the same Offensive scheme that gave our Defense a fit last year. We have that ability with Redshirt Junior Quarterback Blake Sims, but do you actually think that Coach Nick Saban will use him in that way. Not quite. I see him taking some snaps to relieve the starter, but him becoming the starting Quarterback for a “Pro-Style” Offense, is not going to happen. I think that as the season progresses, he could possibly learn how to manage the game as A.J. did, but it’s too early to tell right now. He has a strong arm and sometimes reminds me of a Michael Vick type Quarterback. He can be elusive, but I don’t see him calling the right audible at the right time, just because he hasn’t had the opportunity to do so. A.J. came under the wing of New York Jets Quarterback Greg McElroy. While taking over the duties from Greg, he knew the Offense in and out. Blake didn’t get the same opportunity.

Many of you already know that I can talk about Alabama Football all day, but I will spare you and just say that we have a lot of hurdles to jump during the Spring and Summer workouts. Another monkey wrench thrown in is 44-14784-Fthe playoff system that will be incorporated this season. There are going to be a lot of factors that would have to be put in place for the Alabama Crimson Tide to be put back in the National Title picture. This is going to be an interesting off season, but I’m ready to see it all unfold.

Today was a low point for me this basketball season. Why? Because I let A LOT of bad calls get to me. I don’t mind taking the hit, but for you to continuously beat my girls up without it being fair across the board, then I will say what’s on my mind. As much as I love my Alabama Crimson Tide hats, I think I threw it against the wall at least three times, due to bad calls on the referees part. My girls were motivated to play today’s game, but by the second half were tired and beat up because the referees were favoring the Home team.

One of my best players follows her assignment across the basketball court and stops in front of her, is charged and MY player is called for the foul? Really? I could see if it was intentional, but my player gave the opposing player at least 4 feet put her hands up  and was charged and my team is penalized with a team foul. That fired me up but I let it roll off my back. Another ridiculous call was my player clearly stole the ball from their “best” player and is called for the foul. All she did was take the ball from the opposing player. How is that a foul? In what level of Basketball is that considered a foul. My players were hacked, jumped on, pushed down, but did they call a foul? No, sure didn’t. I fought tooth and nail for my girls. The straw the broke the camels back was the dude at the scorers table told me that I had to play #1 who happens to be my daughter, so of course I know how much playing time they get. I tell him that she just played a quarter so she isn’t going back in. The refs tell me that she has to go back in, myself, my other coach, my wife and other parents are telling this guy that #1 just came out of the game. He swears up and down that she didn’t. I walk away to let the other coach fight the battle.

Then I was like NO. I’m not backing down, I know what I feel is right so I’m going to fight until they kick me out of this gym. The referee walks over, the clock is still going, and I am pleading my case, at this point I’m screaming at the top of my lungs. The dude at the scorers table is trying to get all gangsta so that made me even more mad. I told him so you think I’m black, I a retard and don’t know how to manage my players? I wasn’t trying to turn it into a race issue, but I felt like I was being backed into a corner so I said what I felt like what was happening. I know that using the race card was childish and uncalled for and there is no excuse for it. I did apologize to the individual, but something has to give. What do you have to do to be treated with some type of respect? I don’t like to act like a “savage” or “what they think the stereotypical black man” acts like, but as soon as the other coach, who is a black female she gets whatever she wants. We have 3 games left this season and have to play this team 1 more time. Maybe it’s me as a coach or the way I approach the game, I don’t know. I’m so passionate about the game and making sure my players are being treated sometimes I let my emotions take over, but isn’t that what a Coach/Mentor/Leader is supposed to do? Protect their own? If that’s not the case then maybe Coaching isn’t my passion.

Since retiring from the military, I have had the chance to watch more television and surf the internet a lot more than I used to. Because of my extra time, I’ve seen more than my fair share of infomercials and commercials. Companies today are making claims to make something you do or encounter in your everyday life that usually takes a good bit of your time, they claim they can make it happen in an instant. These same companies are spending millions upon millions to attack all 5 of our senses with their advertisements to get us to believe that their product will give us the results we want instantly. They do it by making catchy jingles for the radio, making commercials funny and unforgettable, giving away free samples through the mail or letting you get a taste of an instant product while you’re shopping in the supermarket. They also are willing to spend millions to have the Top Earners in Sales to give seminars to their company on how to get to exploit the weakness of the consumer.

This is not only happening in the business world, it’s happening in the fitness/weight-loss world as well. They entice you by telling you that you can get this “revolutionary instant product” for free or they will let you tryout this “instant product” for 30 days, but before you are allowed to receive your magical potion for free you have to complete steps 1, 2, and 3. What they are not telling you and not letting you read is the small print. Basically, one way or another they will get their money and meet their quota whether it be by you “pushing” the product or you, yourself will be biting the bullet and paying for this magical potion out of your own pocket. Not only are you involved in this deep, you have family and friends (people that trusted you) involved in this crazy situation all because you were only focused on the end result, forgetting that there is a long road ahead before you can get “comfortable”.

I hear people complaining all the time that they want to lose weight and they are patiently waiting for the next “instant” product instead of putting in the hard work, blood, sweat and tears to lose the weight, they want it gone now. I am speaking from experience. Instead of using that money to buy that instant product, invest that money by purchasing a gym membership. Most of the time you will come out cheaper purchasing the gym membership than buying that magical “instant” weight-loss potion. If you don’t have the money to buy a gym membership, then you need to reevaluate your situation, because investing into something that you really know nothing about or don’t have someone willing to set you up for success, isn’t a smart idea. It takes time to build that type of empire. Here’s a great idea, get off your lazy butt and do something physical. Take a walk, ride a bike or instead of using the riding lawnmower to cut the grass, use the push mower to get the work done. You have to start small. Eventually you will get the results you want. There are two key words that most people overlook or just don’t care about when it comes to hard work they’re called Self Motivation and Discipline. That is the only thing that will get you through your hardest moments.

We, as a society, needs to slow down. Sometimes the old way is the best way to do it, if you want to get the best results. If we as a society continue with this “instant” attitude, the old way is going to fade away and be lost forever. Then what are we left with? Not a damn thing.

First off, today’s blog will be A LOT shorter than yesterday’s.  I want to apologize about the length of it, but as you can tell I loved jumping out of planes. I am passionate about my military accomplishments and could talk all day about them.  I did get a chance to attend Jumpmaster School, but missed out due to missing a Major fault on the Jumpmaster Personnel Inspection (JMPI). EXPOSED CANOPY UNDER THE RESERVE……but on to today’s Blog……………

What motivates me? This may sound crazy to some, but NEGATIVITY motivates me. The reason I say negativity motivates me is because it forces me to work twice as hard to make that negative energy into something positive.  I LOVE proving people wrong.

People saying to me that I CAN’T do something is a HUGE motivator, before I explain that, I’m talking about something realistic, something that I think is tangible.  If you say to me that, “You can’t climb Mount Everest, I’m going say to you, you’re right, because that’s just something that I’m not interested in doing. Maybe one day, but at this point in my life it’s just something that I don’t want to do…….But I digress, back to the issue of People telling me I can’t do something. Hearing the words YOU CAN’T DO SOMETHING is constantly replaying in the back of my mind causing me to grind and give everything I have to make sure that I PROVE you wrong. Showing people that I CAN do what they said I COULDN’T and to see the “oh shit, he did it” expression, is such gratification. I LOVE IT!

Of course, an obvious motivator for me is CLOSE Friends and Family.  When I say close friends, these are people that I trust with my life, some of you may believe it or not, but it’s not many of you out there. I know someone out there is thinking that while you’re deployed, I had to trust many individuals that I barely knew with my life, so that means they are considered friends? NEGATIVE! If we have been on a battlefield together you aren’t considered a friend, you’re a BROTHER/SISTER in Arms. That’s a bond that is forged with fire, blood, sweat and tears. But back to friends, I have a complicated definition for the word “friend”. (That’s a Whole Blog in itself, it’s coming, I just need to gather all my thoughts on the subject.) This is the same for family. I’m talking about immediate family and friends that have surpassed the friend level and I have said to you that I consider you family. There are a lot of people that say that I am a brother to them, but truthfully, to some the feeling is not mutual. There are reasons why the feeling is not mutual.  YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHAT YOU DID OR DIDN’T DO!

There are a million more things that motivate me, but I’m not going to put you to sleep today.
